Uber's competitor Lyft launched a similar feature connecting women and nonbinary riders to non-male drivers nearly two years earlier. Lyft expanded the Women+ Connect tool nationwide in 2024. Both companies have weathered complaints that the ride-sharing apps are not doing enough to address rider assaults.
This month, I met with two top executives to explore this subject. One was Greg Joswiak, Apple's senior vice president of global marketing, known as Joz, who started in 1986. The other was John Ternus, senior vice president of hardware engineering, considered the leading candidate to replace Tim Cook as CEO. He has spent 25 years with the firm. I also had a quick discussion with Cook himself right before Alicia Keys performed outside the Apple Store in Grand Central Station—kicking off Apple's modest anniversary festivities.
